I downloaded Aegis Wing recently. It's free! And I love the side-scrolling shooters. Well, I love R-Type. Anyway, Aegis Wing is competent. Worth the price, but I wouldn't pay money for it.
The single player is mediocre at best; all the levels look pretty much the same, and the bosses, too, look and behave pretty much the same. This is no fault of the development team, whom I understand were interns. They did a good job.
The ships look good, but the bullets look and feel underpowered. Their rate of fire is just too low, and most enemies require a couple hits. The special items are much better, though. It took a while for me to figure out how to use them, but they definitely deliver.
While the single player is mediocre, the multiplayer is much better. Still not worth the money, in my opinion, but worth the download. They add a new idea to the genre by allowing two or more ships to dock to each other. When docked, one player moves both ships and the other can fire any direction. It's definitely cool to play with friends online, but merging the ships doesn't add a whole lot. It does reduce the clutter- it's a lot easier to keep track of your ship, and two ships firing straight ahead does double your the firepower. So while it is a gimmick, it is a cool gimmick.
Overall, I'd say it's worth a download and an hour or two playing, especially if you like some free achievements (which are much easier to achieve in multiplayer). But I can't say that I'd ever come back to it, once I gets me some achievements.
I give Aegis Wing a 3/5.

Aegis Wing is pretty fun when you get 4 people together and play it. The Insane difficulty takes some effort to beat.
